Introduction
Are you interested in gaining work experience in a hospital setting?
The University of Southampton and University Hospital Southampton offer year 12 students the opportunity to apply for LIVE virtual work experience, delivered through Microsoft Teams.
This programme is open to all students based in the UK, however there are places reserved for students who meet two or more widening participation criteria.
Course content
A typical timetable usually includes:
- operating theatre
- outpatient clinic
- an opportunity to speak to current medical students
- opportunities to speak with a variety of clinicians representing pharmacology, health sciences, histopathology, cardiac physiology and more.
As this is a live programme, it is always subject to change depending on the day-to-day happenings within the hospital.
We expect students to treat this experience like a face-to-face work experience placement and students who are late or fail to attend sessions will be removed from the programme. Please ensure you are available for all days before you apply.
The programme is usually delivered online between 9am and 4pm.

The placement dates for 2026/27 are:
- Tuesday 27 and Wednesday 28 October 2026
- Tuesday 16 and Wednesday 17 February 2027
- Tuesday 24 and Wednesday 25 August 2027
